Morocco hadn't notified foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks since November 13th, 2015, when it notified the last O ME-SA / Indian 2001 serotype outbreaks. Since then, it has been applying a vaccination program exclusively in cattle with yearly revaccinations, and it has a control program approved by the OIE/WOAH in force. The O ME-SA / Indian 2001 serotype has circulated in Algeria and Tunisia in 2017 and 2018.

Another serotype that is circulating in the north of Africa is A/Africa/ G-IV, that reached Tunisia and Algeria in April 2017.

In the EU, all the measures implemented in 2013 due to the arrival of the O ME-SA / Indian 2001 serotype to the Maghreb are still in force, and they are included in the European Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/675, of April 7th, 2017, and in Spain in Order AAA/2719/2015, of December 16th, that establishes preventive emergency measures against foot-and-mouth disease in the Maghreb.

The Ministry of Agriculture of Spain reminds of the importance of applying appropriate biosecurity measures on the farms and animal transport.
