The Spanish animal health and nutrition industry invoiced, globally, in 2013, €1,091.67 million: this represents a 0.13% fall in the national market, affected by the general economic crisis and, especially, by the strong increase of the VAT, that rose from 10 to 21% for all the veterinary services for pets.

The figures show that in Spain the market dropped even more: specifically a 1.97% with respect to the previous year. The figures went from €751.18 million in 2012 to €736.41 million in 2013, whilst the exports, that also suffered, grew reaching €355.26 million (+ 3.90%), but this is far from the 10% growth in 2012.

Whilst in 2012 Dogs and cats (more than €184 million) was the segment with a higher growth with respect to the rest of the species in 2013, and in spite of keeping the third place in the ranking, it is the segment with higher losses: some €17 million as a direct consequence of the excessive increase of the VAT for the veterinary services for these animals, and this caused the total figures in 2013 to be €166.47 million (22.61%).

Dogs and cats (22.61% of the sector), together with swine (35.37%) and cattle (25.77%) lead, one year more, the species ranking, in which, with the exception of Pets, the fluctuations in the rest of the species has been moderate.
