According to data from the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE), exports of Spanish cured hams/shoulders through the third quarter of 2022 reached 40,595.68 tons, an increase of 10.78% compared to the same period in 2021 (36,644.25 t). Likewise, exports totaled €420,408,798.48, representing an increase of 15.47% compared to the previous year.
Countries in the European Union imported a total of 28,253.15 t during this period (+6.11%), while Third Countries imported 12,342.53 t (+23.20%). Thus, in the first nine months of the year, the EU accounted for 69.6% of cured ham exports.
Within the EU, the main markets for Serrano ham continue to be France (+10.73%), followed by Germany (-4.8%), which account for 50% of total exports of this product. The markets with the greatest increases in export value through the third quarter of 2022 were Austria (+32.77%), Italy (+28.50%) and Portugal (+26.43%).
The Third Countries that have seen the most significant growth in terms of value were Japan (+119.94%), China (+35.69%), and Mexico (+31.50%). The United Kingdom saw exports increase by 28.95%.
In terms of presentation, 18.07% of the pieces exported during this period were bone-in, which has led to a growth in volume of 4.81% and a 12.17% growth in value. Finally, boneless ham rose by 12.09% in volume and 16.13% in value, with the United Kingdom and China as the consumers with the highest prices for this presentation.
