In July 2017, the year over year drop in the pig slaughterings was important: by 3.3% in terms of the number of animals and by 3.4% in terms of weight. Since early 2017, the reduction reaches 3.9% regarding the number of heads and 4.1% regarding weight.

The French pig production dropped by 4.7% in the first semester of 2017.

In June 2017, the French pork exports fell by 14% (year-to-year figure), this is 7,600 tonnes less. The situation is the same regardless of the destination: 1,300 tonnes less to the EU and 6,300 tonnes less to third countries. The drop in exports to China (-7,200 tonnes) greatly explains this fall. Nevertheless, the exports to China are still higher than in 2015.

At the same time, pork imports grew (+ 9%, year-to-year, or 4,000 tonnes more). The largest increase was in imports from Spain (+2,500 carcass equivalent tonnes, cet). In June, the pork foreign trade balance in terms of volume was negative (-4,400 cet).

In August 2017, the average price of pork (category E+S) dropped again in comparison with July, falling below the 2012-2016 period average value (-3%). This slight decrease is part of a context with a relatively weak French and European demand and a decrease in exports, especially to China. On the other hand, the price of feed, measured with the IPAMPA index, rose in June, with a year over year increase of +2.3%, 10% less than the 2012-2016 five-year average.
