The Danish government wants to create a new generation of pig production with significantly better animal welfare and more value creation in Denmark. Until the framework conditions are in place, a temporary stop is being introduced for new establishment and expansion of existing conventional pig production.

The executive order is intended to ensure that no new conventional pig productions are established and that existing ones are not expanded until the framework conditions for future pig production are in place. The framework will be discussed in the upcoming pig quadripartite.

The temporary stop is targeted at production expansions. It is still possible to get approval for changes to production that may benefit animal welfare, the climate or the environment – as long as it is not linked to production capacity or area.

Applications that have already been submitted are processed according to the previous rules, where the municipalities must take into account whether the application may have a significant impact on the environment, nature, landscape values, and, among other things, odor, noise and transport nuisances.
