Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, met in Manila with the Secretary of Agriculture of the Philippines, Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., following the reopening of the Philippine market to pork products from areas of Spain free of African swine fever (ASF).
During the meeting, Planas thanked the Philippine government for its cooperation in resuming imports of Spanish pork on May 22, following the effective implementation of the regionalization principle in response to ASF. This recognition allows exports to continue from Spanish areas free of the disease.

The decision is particularly important for the Spanish pork sector, as the Philippines is its third largest export market by volume, accounting for 14% of total exports. Furthermore, Spain is the second largest supplier of pork to the Philippines, second only to Brazil.
Spain has been authorized to export pork to the Philippines since 2013, and by 2025 it had 175 authorized establishments. That year, Spanish pork exports to the Philippine market reached €86.78 million in value, making it the third most exported Spanish agri-food product to the country, behind spirits and offal.
The meeting also served to explore new opportunities for cooperation between Spain and the Philippines in agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and food, particularly regarding modernization, digitalization, productivity, and adaptation to climate change. Both countries have had a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in agriculture and fisheries since 2007.
In the overall agri-food trade, Spain exported products to the Philippines worth 577.07 million euros in 2025, compared to imports of 258.59 million, resulting in a favorable balance for Spain of 318.48 million euros.
